Misure e tecniche variabili
Da pittore lego spesso la mia pratica ad un isolamento volontario, molto simile ad una situazione di quarantena, tuttavia ho vissuto con angoscia le prime fasi della pandemia. Poi ho avuto un’intuizione, come spesso accade quando si dipinge, nell’osservare i grafici diffusi quotidianamente dal web. Sentivo di voler trasformare le cattive notizie in in pittura, non avevo tela, ho dipinto utilizzando l’acrilico su carta, cosa per me inusuale, così come inusuale è stato allontanarmi dal figurativo.
L’invito a far parte del progetto Basic Necessities, per la sua natura di gesto in esterno, mi ha spinto poi a stampare questi piccoli dipinti, diffondendoli ed aggiungendo un saluto per il passante. L’immagine del grafico ho pensato potesse servire da promemoria, per non dimenticare che tutto ciò che era ancora presente allora e purtroppo ancora oggi lo è.
Orazio Battaglia nasce a Modica, vive a Roma. La sua pittura porta con sé tanto della sua tradizione e di quegli interrogativi ancestrali relativi al rapporto con il Sacro, ed al senso del magico. Il virtuosismo tecnico dà vita a opere raffinatissime le cui visioni manifestano una tendenza alla rappresentazione simbolica, connessa all’adorazione del divino ma anche alla nascita del linguaggio e dell’icona. Il suo immaginario riporta più universalmente alla questione del sorgere dell’immagine e del verbo, intesi come elementi magici e si collega in parte a quell’esigenza di bloccare l’istante,, al tentativo di agire sulla materia.

Variable measures and techniques
As a painter I often link my practice to voluntary isolation, very similar to a quarantine situation, however, I lived with anxiety the early stages of the pandemic. Then I had an intuition, as often happens when painting, in observing the diagrams spread daily from the web. I felt I wanted to turn bad news into painting, I had no canvas, I painted using acrylic on paper, which was unusual for me, just as it was unusual for me to move away from the figurative.
The invitation to be part of the Basic Necessities project, because of its nature as an outdoor gesture, pushed me to print these small paintings, spreading them as postcards and saying hello to the passer-by. The image of the graphics printed on them I thought could serve as a reminder, in order to not forget that everything that was still present then and unfortunately still is today.
Orazio Battaglia was born in Modica, lives in Rome. His painting brings with it both his tradition and those ancestral questions concerning the relationship with the Sacred, and the sense of magic. The technical virtuosity gives life to very refined works whose visions manifest a tendency towards symbolic representation, connected to the adoration of the divine but also to the origin of language and the concept of an icon. His imagery brings us back more universally to the question of the emergence of the image and the verb, understood as magical elements, and is partly linked to that need to block the instant, to the attempt to act on the matter.
